on deep sea creatures

one mile below the water surface I can find clear animals that emit neon lights if I shine a red light upon them. globe-eyes made of plastic, they swim around, up and down, looking at me in the dark. at night, when i fall asleep, i think i make my way down to the bottom of the sea. i scrape my foot on rocks, and i meet pipe worms that use bacteria to convert hydrogen sulfide, or methane, into some kind of energy - whose tentacles carry hemoglobin to bring oxygen to the bacteria (the whole apparatus stained a bloody color). Surrounding all this, in peace, in a black sea, in all three dimensions, I can go any which way I please. and still, it will be dark, life away from the sun, self-sustaining, independent. the life down here doesn't need any people. happiness without a model. without God at the bottom of the sea.

Christmas Eve.

I'm watching Love Actually with Michelle. Wouldn't be Christmas without movies like that...

And I'm making a Four Cheese Tony's Pizza (frozen). Yum.

Now back to tracking Santa on CNN and google earth. seriously.

on death of a young person

I attended a funeral earlier today for one of my brother's friends, Blake. The entire room was full at Matthews funeral home. I hadn't dressed up in black in a long time. I envied my brother, who were a nice vibrant argyle sweater.

But, anyway, Blake was a fine young man who loved to party, from what I've gathered. He was a guy who did everything he could to keep up with friends. Always calling. Always checking up. Those types of people are rare, I believe.

His status on facebook right now is "like a gobstopper I last, last, last lol."

Cheers to Blake, who died at 21 years old.

AIDS panel

Today. Medical school. AIDS panel.

Six patients described their stories. How they got it. How they dealt with it.

They were also comedians. They all had a common physician, who moderated the discussion.

publication

Good news today. I found out I will be listed as a co-first author on a manuscript. The paper is based on my data from summer research.

I hope it will be published in a top journal, but I'm not sure where it will be submitted.
